Friday Fun: The KPI Wildlife Reserve
The Reserve boasted one of the richest concentrations of corporate wildlife ever documented. Decades of careful conservation had produced an ecosystem of extraordinary diversity, where every important metric enjoyed legal protection regardless of its relationship with the surrounding environment.
Customer Satisfaction occupied the most popular enclosure. Naturally nervous, the species reacted poorly to direct exposure to dissatisfied customers, so rangers developed sophisticated breeding programmes based on carefully timed surveys, selectively chosen respondents and strategically optimistic wording. The population remained exceptionally healthy despite neighbouring habitats showing unmistakable signs of famine.
Sprint Velocity roamed the Agile Plains in vast migrating herds. Early observers believed the animals grew stronger through improved engineering practices. Later research suggested they reproduced simply by increasing story-point estimates and moving unfinished work to the following migration season. The scientific community considered both explanations equally valid until funding expired.
Employee Engagement followed remarkably predictable seasonal patterns. Roughly three weeks before the annual census, colourful displays of pizza, breakfast pastries, branded hoodies and inspirational speeches appeared throughout the Reserve. Males and females alike responded enthusiastically to these courtship rituals before quietly returning to their previous levels of engagement immediately after the questionnaires had been collected.
Innovation remained one of the Reserve's most mysterious inhabitants. The species seldom appeared in its natural habitat but flourished under conference lighting, where it could survive indefinitely on keynote presentations, AI demonstrations, sticky notes and photographs of executives standing thoughtfully beside whiteboards. Nobody had yet observed Innovation producing offspring, although several documentaries claimed otherwise.
Platform Adoption gathered almost exclusively around artificial watering holes known as Mandatory Standards. Conservationists initially believed the species preferred these locations naturally. Subsequent observation revealed that every alternative water source had simply been filled with concrete.
Technical Debt occupied an enormous protected valley. Every year the Reserve announced ambitious programmes to reduce its population. Every year the population increased. Several respected zoologists eventually concluded that Technical Debt reproduced asexually during steering committee meetings, although experimental verification proved difficult because no one could remain conscious for the entire reproductive cycle.
Delivery Predictability represented one of modern conservation's finest achievements. Rangers first removed production incidents, urgent customer requests, architectural surprises, changing priorities, organisational politics and reality itself before conducting their observations. Under these carefully controlled conditions the species demonstrated astonishing stability.
Meeting Attendance travelled in immense migratory flocks capable of darkening entire calendars. Individually harmless, large formations had nevertheless been observed consuming whole engineering departments while leaving behind only minutes, action items and an overwhelming sense that somebody else should probably organise a follow-up.
Action Items bred enthusiastically after every workshop. Freshly hatched specimens displayed remarkable energy and remarkable optimism. Few survived beyond the following Monday.
Roadmaps performed spectacular seasonal migrations. Every quarter they advanced confidently towards distant strategic objectives before executing a graceful ninety-degree turn at the first sighting of an executive with a new idea.
AI Adoption arrived recently as an introduced species. Its brilliant plumage attracted immediate attention from investors, journalists and board members alike. Scientists remained uncertain whether the creature represented a genuinely new life form or simply Productivity wearing expensive feathers, but agreed that it photographed exceptionally well.
The Reserve also maintained a handful of critically endangered native species.
- Operational Simplicity.
- Maintainability.Customer Trust.
These magnificent animals required years to mature and refused to thrive in artificial habitats. They preferred stable engineering ecosystems where incentives aligned with long-term outcomes, observations mattered more than presentations and engineers occasionally received uninterrupted afternoons. Such environments had become increasingly difficult to preserve as the Reserve expanded.
Then there was Value Creation.
Older rangers spoke of it with almost mythical affection. They claimed it had once roamed freely across organisations, leaving behind profitable businesses, loyal customers and surprisingly relaxed engineers. Younger staff regarded these stories with polite scepticism. None had ever encountered the animal outside historical archives.
Official population reports, however, confirmed that Value Creation had enjoyed another record-breaking year.
